Conversations about death are often avoided, but at the Ringway Centre last week, local residents gathered to show that talking about one of life’s certainties can also be uplifting, reassuring and deeply human.
Hosted by Jane, the first Grove Park Death Cafe provided a warm and welcoming space where people came together over tea and cake to explore thoughts and experiences around death and dying. There was no agenda, no guest speakers and no expectation to speak – simply an opportunity to share conversations that are often left unsaid.
The Death Cafe movement encourages open discussion about everything from caring for ageing parents and planning for the future to grief, remembrance and what it means to live a fulfilling life. As Jane explained, becoming more comfortable with the fact that we will all die can help us live more fully.
The positive response from those attending means the Death Cafe will now become a regular monthly event at the Ringway Centre, taking place on the last Thursday of every month from 10am to 12pm.
The upcoming dates are:
- 30 July
- 27 August
- 24 September
- 29 October
- 26 November
- 17 December (December’s session takes place slightly earlier due to the Christmas period.)
Whether you’ve experienced bereavement, are supporting ageing loved ones, have practical questions about the future, or are simply curious to join an honest conversation about one of life’s greatest certainties, you’ll be made very welcome.
After all, perhaps learning about the art of a good death is also part of learning how to live a good life.
