Our July Open Mic at the Ringway Centre will be remembered for all the right reasons. After a scorching London day, with temperatures reaching 35°C, we decided to move the evening outdoors, carrying the tables, chairs, microphones and instruments into the garden, where a gentle breeze provided welcome relief from the heat.
It proved to be the perfect setting. As the sun began to set, music filled the garden while friends gathered to sing, play, chat and enjoy each other’s company. There was a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, reminding us that some of the best community events are often the simplest.
The evening also gave us the opportunity to celebrate two very special birthdays.
We raised our glasses of homemade plum, peach and grape juice, shared a homemade cake, and toasted the health of Freddy, whose birthday falls on 10 July, and Grace, who celebrated her birthday on 9 July.
At 94 years young, Freddy continues to be an inspiration to everyone who attends our Open Mic sessions. An accomplished musician, retired engineer and lifelong learner, he is someone I often refer to as the Godfather of Music at the Ringway Centre. Not because he seeks the spotlight, but because he quietly brings people together. He encourages new musicians, makes sure everyone has the opportunity to perform, generously shares his knowledge and helps create an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome. During the evening, we paid tribute not only to the remarkable life he has lived, but also to the example he continues to set through his curiosity, humility and love of music.
We also celebrated Grace, who marked her 81st birthday. Compared with Freddy, she’s still a youngster! Many readers will remember Grace from the tribute we published to Jimmy, and from this year’s Summer Fête, where she led the musical entertainment with confidence and enthusiasm. With her beautiful singing voice, impeccable sense of rhythm and charming performances of music hall favourites, she brings warmth and energy to every gathering she attends.
As the evening unfolded, songs followed one another, conversations flowed and laughter echoed around the garden. The homemade juice, fruit and cake gave everyone the chance to pause between performances and celebrate two people who have become such an important part of our Ringway Centre family.
The evening was a wonderful reminder that community is built through shared experiences. Music has a unique way of bringing people together, creating friendships and celebrating the people who make our neighbourhood such a special place to live.
If you would like to join us, our Open Mic takes place on the second Thursday of every month and welcomes musicians, singers and listeners of all abilities. The third Thursday of the month is our Music Night, also known as the Singalong, where everyone is encouraged to join in with familiar songs in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Whether you perform, sing along or simply come to listen, you’ll always receive a warm welcome at the Ringway Centre.
