Summer is a great time to get outdoors, stretch your legs and discover somewhere new, and our Wednesday Health Walks with Sonja continue throughout August with enjoyable routes for walkers of all abilities.
Although some of the walks have had to be cancelled, owing to the extreme heat, Sonja has a wonderful schedule that might be revisited later in the year. Please contact her directly to find out if the walks are going ahead: 07836 548870.
Each week explores a different corner of south-east London, from ancient woodland and historic gardens to London’s canals. The walks are as much about good company as they are about exercise, giving everyone the chance to enjoy fresh air, friendly conversation and places they may never have visited before.
This month’s programme, gets together at 10:30 am, as usual and includes:
- Wednesday 12 August – Albany Park to Hall Place (meet at Lee Station) *Suspended owing to the heatwave.
- Wednesday 19 August – Scadbury Park
- Wednesday 26 August – Whitechapel Circular via Regent’s Canal (meet at Grove Park Station)
Some walks involve travelling by train or bus to the starting point, making it possible to explore a wider area without needing a car.
Discover somewhere new
- Scadbury Park
Did you know that Scadbury Park is one of London’s largest ancient woodlands? Covering more than 300 acres, it is home to the remains of the medieval Scadbury Manor, once owned by the Walsingham family, advisers to Queen Elizabeth I. The woodland is rich in wildlife, with ponds, meadows and a wide variety of birds and butterflies. - Whitechapel and Regent’s Canal
This walk combines green spaces with London’s East End heritage. Following stretches of Regent’s Canal, you’ll discover a quieter side of the capital before returning through an area shaped by centuries of immigration, industry and culture. Depending on the group, the walk may finish early at Bethnal Green Underground station.
Whether you’re looking to become more active, meet new people or simply enjoy a morning outdoors, everyone is welcome. Just wear comfortable shoes, bring a drink and join Sonja for a walk at your own pace.
