The Grove Park Community Group is thrilled to announce the return of our annual Kubb Championship, where skill, strategy, and a little bit of luck with a wooden baton all come together. Join us for a fun, competitive, and truly unique afternoon at the Ringway Centre on Saturday, October 11th, starting at 2:00 PM!
What in the World is Kubb?
Often called Viking Chess, Kubb (pronounced koob) is a fantastic Swedish lawn game that combines the elements of bowling, horseshoes, and a touch of strategy.
The game is played between two teams on a rectangular pitch. The objective is simple: use wooden batons (called kastpinnar) to knock over your opponent’s wooden blocks (kubbar) lined up on their baseline. The center of the pitch is home to the most important piece of all—the King.
Here’s the thrilling catch: you have to knock down all five of your opponent’s kubbs before you can take a shot at the King. If you accidentally topple the King at any point before all the other blocks are down, you lose the game immediately! This rule keeps the tension high right up to the very last throw. It’s a game that’s easy to learn but challenging to master, making it perfect for both seasoned players and first-time throwers.
Grove Park’s Kubb Dynasty: A Roll Call of Champions
Since 2020, the Grove Park Community Group has proudly hosted this championship, bringing neighbours together for a friendly but fierce battle on the green. The competition has seen some brilliant moments and crowned a great set of champions over the years.
