Have you ever thought about volunteering but wondered whether you really had enough time?
It’s an easy thought to dismiss. We often imagine volunteering means making a huge commitment. In reality, it can be as simple as serving tea and cake for an hour or two, helping tidy a community space, planting a few flowers or sharing a skill that comes naturally to you.
Giving your time can introduce you to people you might never otherwise have met. It brings the satisfaction of seeing the difference you’ve made with your own hands, builds confidence, teaches new skills and reminds us that we all have something valuable to offer. Often, it is not just the people receiving the help who benefit, but the volunteers themselves.

There is also growing recognition of the positive effect volunteering can have on our mental wellbeing. Having a sense of purpose, being part of a team, learning new skills and simply spending time with other people can all help us feel more connected and positive.
Whether you’re working from home, retired, looking to meet new people or simply wanting to do something meaningful with a few spare hours, volunteering can be a rewarding way to support both your community and your own wellbeing.
That feeling was clear when a team of Google employees visited the Ringway Centre recently as part of the company’s GoogleServe volunteering programme. Together they redecorated the main hall, cleared unwanted items, solved practical problems and left behind a brighter, more welcoming space for the local community. What stood out most wasn’t simply what they achieved, but how much they enjoyed doing it. The smiles, laughter and shared sense of achievement at the end of the day were a reminder that giving something back can be enormously rewarding.
Could you spare a little time this August?
Summer is often a quieter time for many people, and even an hour or two can make a real difference. At Grove Park Community Group, there are many different ways to get involved!

You could help at the Game for a Laugh, August 11th, where a friendly conversation can mean just as much as the refreshments.
You might enjoy a morning of gardening, painting, putting up shelves or helping keep the Ringway Centre looking its best. Perhaps you have professional skills you could share, whether that’s photography, bookkeeping, IT, social media, DIY, fundraising or helping organise an event.
Every contribution, however small it may seem, helps keep the charity thriving.

Built by volunteers
Grove Park Community Group has been built on that same spirit for more than 50 years. Formed in 1972 by local residents determined to improve life in Grove Park, the charity continues to bring people together through activities, events and projects that support the local community. The Ringway Centre itself exists because generations of volunteers have given their time, skills and enthusiasm to create a place where people can meet, learn and feel they belong.
You don’t need special qualifications or lots of spare time to become part of that story. Whether you can offer an hour every now and then or would like to become more involved, there is always something useful to do and someone happy to welcome you.
You may go home a little tired, with paint on your clothes or soil on your hands. You’ll almost certainly leave with new friends, a real sense of accomplishment and a wonderful story to tell.
If this calls to you, we’d love to hear from you.
